Snobberish Music Maturity
Last night, after my wife and I finished watching a movie, I briefly channel surfed to find Sonic Youth/The Black Keys perform on Austin City Limits. Most Saturdays I forget to watch. I had never seen either band perform live prior to viewing that recording. It was basically what I expected, but strange that both shows left me more unsure about the music I gravitate toward and why. More and more I find my ears sleeping through what would have brought days of pleasure only a few years prior.
But I know from my 'meh' Sonic Youth/Black Keys viewing experience, something is changing. I found Tame Impala's Lonerism to be too crammed. Very surprised so many rave and rave about it. Yellow and Green by Baroness is good if you don't pay attention to the lyrics. WHY? released a dud. Dan Deacon's America never felt like an album and the one record I fell instantly for (Shearwater's Animal Joy) no one remembered or cared when it came time to tally those scores up. Don't get me wrong, I still desire to listen to SY...and to a certain extent The Black Keys, but I'm just finding it harder to be excited by what everyone else seems to agree on.
And while I've always struggled to be definitive about my favorites, this year seems more about what I haven't listened to.
